We love a family day out at Kenilworth castle, it is one of our most favourite places to visit locally. Close enough to drive over and have an afternoon of fun without too much hassle.
A fun family day out at Kenilworth Castle
The children are still not fully on board with the idea of looking round old houses and bits of broken castle. Unless of course there is potential for climbing and then they are all over it!
It was hardly a surprise that we’d not even made it to the gatehouse of the castle and they’d been wall walking already, The sheer drop on one side didn’t worry me in the slightest..Honest!
It wasn’t long before they found some more climbing equipment, I mean ruins of course to climb. This time minus the drop but they were soon throwing themselves off and in to Rob’s waiting arms. It did make for some spectacular ‘flying’ pictures though.
The children just about tolerated the history element of the visit which at least meant Rob and I could try to appreciate it. Although that said, 3 of the 5 fully embraced the fashion history though, you just can’t beat a bit of dressing up.
Once we promised to buy the children a sword each, we knew we had them sold. They spent the afternoon having sword fights and climbing, what more could you want as a child?
As they played, we sat back and took in all Kenilworth has to offer. It is such an impressive place. I’d love to have seen it back in its glory days, it must have been huge.
Just putting it out there, I think it may well be more impressive than its fellow castle, Warwick! Not that I don’t love that as well of course. There is just something so magical about this crumpling castle. You can climb pretty high up and have some amazing views of Warwickshire.
Having an English Heritage pass has saved us £30 on the ticket price. But for a family day out, I think that’s great value anyway. There is an on site cafe and gift shop.
We have been back many times and we even surprised the children with the news we were going to Disneyland Paris here! It definitely has a place in our hearts.
From here, I would recommend a walk to Abbey fields park. It has a wonderful play area, river to splash in and somewhere to feed the ducks. It’s just a short walk from the castle and well worth a visit.
