Valentine’s day reality

Let’s be honest, So many people don’t celebrate Valentines day anymore. When you talk to happily married couples they will tell you it’s just another day. That they don’t need a special day to tell their partner they love them.

Now while I agree that I don’t need a day to celebrate our love. What you can be damn sure about is the need to be lavished with fancy flowers, chocolates, a nice meal and generally having your every whim catered for is important.

There seems to be a view that Valentines day is just for new couples but I am here to tell you that we should all be making an effort to celebrate. We all need to make romance a priority.

How to make romance a priority this Valentines day

Online Romance

If you’re not in a relationship currently, now is the perfect time to start your search. I think you’ll find that most people would rather not spend Valentines alone. Take it from someone that spent most of her Valentine’s alone. In fact ALL the valentines that came before 2018! So I know what I am talking about here.

Time is ticking on the Valentines countdown and it’s a difficult time for dating. Here is where sites like Dating agency Devon will help you in this quest for love. Making these connections online now could lead to a night of Zoom romance on the big day. Given the lock down situation currently, here are some lock down friendly suggestions.

  • Online movie night, set the time, pick a film and watch ‘together’
  • If you’re feeling creative, you could cook virtually. Pick a recipe and work through it at the same time. This can then turn in to a dinner date once it is ready!
  • Not a cook? Then pick a take away that you both like an order in separately. If you’re having a date in Devon, you could even order from the same place!
  • How about a quiz? Not a traditional pub quiz but write your own quick fire questions. A great way to get to know each other.
  • If you feel happy to do so, maybe you could send each other a card and gift as well.

Long term romance

As a more established couple, it is so easy to forget about romance. This doesn’t mean you don’t love each other, far from it. But you probably show it in very different way.

That cup of coffee in bed, switching out the toothbrush heads each time, cuddles while cooking dinner, or an evening foot rub. All of these are little signs of love and for me personally are so important. But as a loving couple, you both deserve to hear those 3 special words and share some much needed romance.

Of course you could try the same activities as above but you get to be in the same room together! Otherwise here are some ways you can inject some romance in to your Valentines.

  • Make time for each other. Schedule it in if you need to. Life is busy but do not let it get in the way
  • Be thoughtful and get them something that you know will make them smile. Or a handmade gift that will last a lifetime.
  • Have a date night, You may not be able to go out right now but we are getting very good at adapting aren’t we
  • Share with them exactly how you feel, remember though today is for romance so save the gripes for another day!
  • Sit and talk, REALLY talk. Open up and reminisce. I promise that by reflecting on your relationship you’ll realise just how special you are together

  1. I agree that we need something to look forward to and celebrate this year more than ever.

Last year, I went out for a “Galentine’s Day” lunch on February 13 with some of my female co-workers. It was a great way to celebrate female friendships. It’s a shame we’re not in the office this year to do it again.

  4. “As a more established couple, it is so easy to forget about romance. ” You are so right, Claire, especially when you factor in children as well. But the little things, such as a cuddle, or snuggling up to watch a film, or sitting down and talking together without interruptions, are all perfect for showing the love – thank you for the reminder! x

We really try to make an effort, but with each passing year, the kids get older and their bedtime gets later! At this rate, date night will be 9.30pm in bed while the kids stay up!

  5. I would say that I am the romantic one in my relationship and I love doing cute little things to make my man smile. We love being at home (luckily) so I’ll try to jazz up our evening with some lovely food!

  7. This was a nice post with a different perspective! To be honest I never really celebrated Valentine’s purely because I like doing these types of things on any other day of the year. Plus myself and parter got together on the 9th of feb so that is our celebration day 😂 this year though why not and every year I can see now how it’s a nice celebration xx

    1. clairelomax2018 says:

We are the same really, we try to make time for each other in some way each day. It would be nice to have some much needed child free time, it has been a very long time!

We are going to do the same but also spend the day itself with the kids and possibly my Dad who is in our bubble. Make a full day of fun for us all x

I don’t have any plans for romance this year. Our family is on completely different schedules for some time now. I’ll watch something special with my youngest and probably play a game with my oldest.

That’ll be lovely though. We are having a family valentines this year x

I hope this year is the year you celebrate x x

As we’re still likely to be in lockdown we’re planning on getting in some nice food and eating at the table (for once) so we can pretend we’re at a restaurant as we’d usually go out for a nice meal x

  19. Amazing post Claire. I love Valentine’s day a lot! I feel like valentine day isn’t just about “couples” but I feel like valentine’s day is about showing love to family, loved ones and everyone around us. These are all lovely ideas for couples on valentines day. I for one am going to be celebrating Valentine day with my family and my friends lol. I really love the tip on treating yourself and romancing yourself on valentine’s day. There’s nothing better than that. x!

Sometimes my partner probably wishes he could date me virtually… instead I’m here nagging him to do jobs etc!!

    2. clairelomax2018 says:

That’s good. I think my partner would enjoy a zoom one rather than me driving him nuts in person!

  21. Some really lovely ideas, jealous of those celebrating with their loved ones whether in person or virtually.

  22. I think we gave up on Valentine’s Day years ago! We wanted to go out for a meal this year but that won’t be happening.

    1. clairelomax2018 says:

Rubbish isn’t it. We are having a family valentines this year x

  23. These are some great tips. Having been in a relationship for a few years now, I definitely find it more difficult to make romance a priority. There just always feels like there is something else to do. This year we are trying to make more time for each other, even if its just to sit and watch a movie together.

    1. clairelomax2018 says:

It is so easy to get wrapped up in life isn’t it x

  24. We’re one of those couples that don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day but given the circumstances I think it would be nice to do something special to celebrate our relationship! Thanks for the inspiration!

    1. clairelomax2018 says:

I think this year, more than any other it’s really important to celebrate x

  25. I agree with you 100% that we need to celebrate love and even if we should celebrate the small everyday things it’s so important to take time to do something special once in a while and valentines day is perfect for that 😍

    1. clairelomax2018 says:

It is really important we always make an effort for each other to celebrate love x

  26. Needed these tips! Feeling like it’s even more important to do something romantic in these times because we all need to feel the love right now.

    1. clairelomax2018 says:

I think that is so lovely. My partner and I try to do something each night that is just for us but the kids go to bed so late now they are older there is hardly ever time!

  31. I’m not sure what my plans for Valentine’s Day are, but me and my boyfriend will probably make dinner and watch a movie together. Even though we have been together for over 6 years, it is nice having a special day to show our love.

    1. clairelomax2018 says:

I think we are doing a family friendly Valentines this year as it’s on a Sunday. I might make an effort on the Saturday night for my Fiance and I. I hope you have a lovely Valentines x

  32. Nice post. I love all these ideas especially ordering something or cooking something together and having a virtual date and just sending gifts to each other but I’m really single right now so that’s not for me haha, I’m just going to get something for myself instead.

    1. clairelomax2018 says:

You definitely need to do something special for yourself. We all deserve it x x
