Today I want to share 5 Simple steps to healthier teeth. A lot of us will have missed dentist appointments over the last few months. Although they are now open, some will be reluctant to return to the dentist unless it is an emergency.
That is why, now more than ever, We need to make our teeth hygiene a priority. are some great ways to look after your teeth.

5 Simple steps to healthier teeth
1. Watch what you eat
We all know we should be avoiding sugary snacks and drinks, but there are other foods that we should be aware of. Things like Citrus fruits can be tough on the enamel as can the starch in bread and even crisps.
Of course cutting these out is not always possible but it is all about balance. If you’re drinking sugary drinks, try using a straw. Just watch out for the environment here and try a reusable one.
2. Flossing
No not the Fortnite dance! Although you can give it a try while actually flossing, it could prove pretty dangerous on your gums though.
They say flossing is almost as important as brushing, and although it can seem like a real pain in the gum… It is so important! It is the one thing my dentist reminds me of each time I go. I leave the dentist chair and head straight off to buy floss that I use religiously for a few weeks.
Now I am preaching the message, I can hand on heart say I have been making a huge effort to do this each time I brush.
3. Use the right toothbrush
I’d always recommend an electric toothbrush. They can be fairly pricey initially but I think the difference makes the price well worth it. Plus they last for such a long time.
The heads are easy to replace and fairly reasonably priced as well. Which is key to these toothbrushes as they need to be changed regularly.
My Dentist was able to tell the difference when I started using one so it must be effective.

4. Don’t skip on the Dentist
As I said earlier, I am sure most of us are overdue an appointment now, but in normal times, that 6 monthly appointment is really important. Time does fly by, but that six monthly check can stop a potential problem in its tracks.
Don’t forget the children as well. It is very important to keep their teeth in the best condition possible. Plus, if you can make it the norm, hopefully they will always make that 6 monthly appointment.
It is really important to find a dentist that is right for you. My childhood dentist filled me with terror and left adult me hating the dentist. My current dentist was aware of this and is brilliant at keeping me relaxed. Any treatment I require he will always go slow and offer constant reassurance.
5. A great toothpaste
I have never had any allegiance to a particular brand of toothpaste. I just always bought what was on offer when I went shopping.
I have talked about keeping my teeth ‘wedding’ ready previously. I’d been using a charcoal toothpaste. And while I could see a difference initially, the cons outweighed the pros.
I needed a whitening toothpaste that would leave me teeth clean and my breath smelling fresh. I was recently sent Colgate advanced white toothpaste to try out. With it’s promise of whiter teeth in 10 days, I was keen to give it a try.

After the first use, I could taste the difference. I don’t think I had realised how much of a nasty taste was left in my mouth after using the charcoal toothpaste. This meant that after the first use of Colgate, the freshness was obvious.
This fresh taste and smell lasted much longer than I would have expected. My teeth had a lovely ‘squeaky’ clean feel to them that lasted all day. There has been a clear difference in the appearance of my teeth which I am so pleased about.
I have suddenly developed a toothpaste allegiance! One that I would highly recommend if you’re looking for a simple tooth whitener with the added bonus of fresh and clean feeling teeth, without the need for hours of treatment at the Dentist.
There you have it, my simple tips to a healthier, whiter and happier smile.
Are you looking for a simple way to get whiter teeth? Would you try these toothpaste out?
Don’t forget to book that check up either!

Thanks for these tips! Really important to take care of our teeth 😀
I don’t fancy dentures when I am older which acts as a constant reminder to care for them x x
Great tips! I’m trying to make flossing more of a habit because it definitely makes a difference. Thanks for the reminder!

No problem, thank you for reading x
Teeth health is so important and as an image consultant I also stress how it affects your image. It’s inevitable that people notice your teeth, even on a zoom call. I go twice a year and haven’t missed an appointment for years.
It’s true. Our teeth say a lot about us as a person I think x
These are really important tips. I get really funny about oral care and like to look after my teeth perfectly. I had braces for a while and it made me realise how important teeth are. Thank you for sharing these tips!

Thank you. I too had braces and suffered with Neuralgia and it really changed my view on my teeth too x
I know what you mean about dentist fear, I had that for years until I found one I liked. Unfortunately he retired before lockdown so now I have to start all over again 🙁 I haven’t tried this Colgate toothpaste but I’m always on the lookout for something to whiten my teeth safely so I’ll have to give it a try – thank you, Claire 🙂 Lisa
Some great tips here! I definitely need to step up my flossing game!

The dancing or the teeth one? hehehe
When I was little, I HATED brushing my teeth and would get out of it as often as I could. I was also terrified of the dentist. So I think that definitely left me with teeth not in the best condition growing up! I wish mine were whiter and I’ve tried so many different things to help them get whiter but nothing that’s made a HUGE difference. It also doesn’t help that I drink a lot of tea but HOW can you cut tea out of your diet haha! This toothpaste sounds great – we use Colgate occasionally. Might grab this one with the next shop!
Coffee for me! And there is no way I’m giving it up, I was late to the coffee party as it is!
I’d highly recommend, I’ve been really impressed with the difference x
We’ve just had our first trip to the dentist since lockdown last week. I’m terrified of the dentist, as much like you had bad experiences as a child / teen, but I force myself to go regularly as I want to look after my teeth.
They are not pleasant places are they but our teeth are so important x
I always floss, it’s really important if your teeth are close together. Colgate is a very trusted brand
Yeah I am definitely a flossing girl now x
Great tips. We have always shyed away from electric but I have been told youu can get compostable heads for some brands now so I need to do some investigating
great tips we have always shyed away from electric brushes but I have heard that you can get compostable replacement heads now so I need to investigate
Oh I didn’t know that so will have to check it out x
These are some great tips. I’m considering purchasing a teeth whitening device like HiSmile at the moment… x

So true. I’ve just been gifted an electric toothbrush and it’s reformed my ways. I’ve even started flossing! I’ll have to give the paste a whirl for sure.
Oh do try it. Especially with the electric toothbrush, it’s a winning combo x
I will have to try the toothpaste! I’ve been looking for a great cleaning one that also whitens and has a good taste so awesome! But you’re so right, your teeth are important!
More important than we remember I reckon. I am so worried I will outlive my teeth and need dentures!
Yes yes yes! Spread the hygiene wisdom Claire bear! I’m so overdue a trip to the dentist because of the lockdown and all. Maybe that’s an idea for a future blog post of yours 😄

Some really great tips! I swear by Colgate toothpaste, it’s the only brand I buy these days for my family! Sim
I have just been and stocked up, i am so impressed with it x
Having healthier teeth is so important and these are all great tips for us to follow. I do use Colgate but not the whitening tube so will need to try this next.
It’s well worth a try, I have just been and stocked up x x
I didn’t know that about starches! Interesting. I will definitely have to keep that in mind. Another downfall of mine is Pepsi. I love it so hard!
Oh I love pepsi, although I go for Diet i don’t suppose it is much better for my teeth x
I made a promise to myself during 2020 that I would take more care of my teeth than I have done in the past and I love how my teeth feel nowadays! I love Colgate toothpaste, it’s so good! x

We just take them for granted don’t we? I have just been and stocked up on more of this toothpaste x
These are all really good tips. I’ve been meaning to get a whitening toothpaste in. My teeth could do with some assistance.
I think we are all a bit the same. They don’t seem a priority which is silly really, I worry I will outlive my teeth x
These are great reminders. I definitely think we are all overdue now because of lockdown so I will be booking us in as soon as I can.
Thankfully I got in 2 days before lockdown was announced due to some toothache so he gave me the works, knowing it would be a while. My son needs to go though so I will get us in over the summer hopefully x
I need a lot of dental work to help my teeth. It’s one thing I wish I’d looked after more.
I know the feeling, years of braces and severe neuralgia left my teeth being something I hated x
Great tips 🙂 I really like the Colgate toothpastes they’re my go-to 🙂
I have just been and stocked up!
I’m a Dental Hygienist so I totally agree with all these points you shared! Thanks for bringing awareness to proper dental hygiene!
Aww thank you x x
Great tips! I’m really starting to feel bad about my teeth as it’s been so long since I had my check up now. That’s also my favourite toothpaste! Thanks for sharing these ideas, I’ll definitely be making more of an effort.
I have just been and stocked up on more! I am really impressed x
This is a great post! Having good dental hygiene is so important – i cracked one of my teeth on a fall without realising it and got crippling migraines where sugar/bacteria was getting in through the crack and on my tooth’s nerves. xx

Ouch! I had several years of tooth issues, and it is the most uncomfortable and depressing thing I have ever endured x
I’ll hold my hands up and admit I wasn’t taking as good a care with my teeth as I should have, it’s just shame I haven’t been able to see the hygenist during this time due to COVID but I’m doing what I can myself x
That’s all we can do really, our best x
Great advice! I have to get back into flossing. I’m so bad at it because I find it so uncomfortable. But I’m not getting any younger, and nor are my teeth. So I really need to start taking things more seriously.
I worry so much about my teeth not lasting as long as I do. the thought of dentures makes me shudder!
I can’t start my day without brushing my teeth; same rule applies when going to bed. But flossing is not my strongest skill, I’ll work on this. 🙂
Me too, first thing I do in the morning and the last thing at night x
Is there anyone that LIKES going to a dentist? I don’t! I didn’t always floss and probably don’t always as much as I should but I find that using floss picks is helpful.
I don’t know many the dentist, My Mum always did but I think its because he had a bit of a crush on her. He still talks about how much he misses her whenever I go!
I think the right brush is important, I have got a new brush lately and it has really helped!
It definitely makes a difference x
Following nagging by my dentist I have started flossing and its not as hard as I thought it would be
Hmm… I’ve never used an electric toothbrush, but my friends who use it warn me against them because of how damaging they are for the gums in the long term. I think it would perhaps be best for people with weak gums not to use them. Thanks for sharing these tips! I love Colgate too!!!
I knew citrus wasn’t too good for teeth but never knew about starch and bread and crisp!!
I also tried charcoal toothpaste but it felt too strange, so happy to go back to my normal toothpaste!
Happy to say I can tick off all of these! Except in December when I eat way too many cookies and citrus fruits…
I’m always on the look out for a new whitening toothpaste to try so I’ll have to give this one a go!
It’s great, I went and stocked up yesterday x
I need to work on my flossing (the dance obviously lol jk). I started doing and then just stopped. I really want to get back into it, especially seeing how important it is.
We regularly use Colgate, it’s a brand our family trust. I was so pleased when the dentist reopened as my crown had fallen out during lockdown. Mich X
Great tips, I started going to the dentist regularly and it does help in keeping everything in check 🙂
I’ve always been a bit scared of the charcoal toothpaste for whitening (I just worry I’ll never get it out of the gaps properly! 😂) so this toothpaste seems like it’d be right up my street! I must admit I’m really bad with flossing – it’s one of those things I always mean to do but it’s just so easy to forget! x
You just can’t go wrong with Colgate, it’s our go-to brand. Flossing is so important, it can make such a difference!
Thanks for sharing, this reminds me that I need to look after my teeth more, flossing sometimes hurts for me so a painful flossing treatment would be lovely 🙂
Glad it has helped x x

I definitely agree that regular dentist appointments are important! I have definitely been drinking a lot more tea during lockdown and I am trying to cut that down. Otherwise I don’t tend to drink sugary drinks often, and I don’t eat sugary foods that often. But still my teeth could be better (probably didn’t help all the alcohol at uni in the past haha). I have said though that one day I just want to pay and get my teeth sorted out (they are straight etc but I mean whitened/gums everything done). But I definitely will give this toothpaste a try xxx
