Top Netflix choices this summer

I love sharing what we are watching because it’ll quite often lead to some brilliant recommendations from you guys. Here are our Top Netflix choices this summer.

Netflix has really delivered over Lock down, keeping us all occupied and giving us plenty to talk about. Let’s just think back to all the Tiger King meme’s that kept us laughing in March.

White Lines

With most of us avoiding travelling this year, watching White lines could give you all those lovely summer ibiza vibes without the need to cram yourself on to an airplane in your mask.

Of course there is the little issue of an unsolved murder, But while Zoe tries to find her Brother’s murderer, the audience are treated to a tour of Ibiza. With a great soundtrack and wall to wall sunshine, this is the ultimate summer viewing. I am keeping my fingers crossed for a second series.

Friends

Last summer I worked my way through Sex and the City, so this year I decided to pick up Friends again. I can’t even tell you how often I have watched the whole thing through!

It is so easy to watch though and when I have been working from home it has kept me company. Thanks to Netflix, I can just dip in and out whenever I feel like it.

Unbelievable

This is a new watch for us, but as ever we are slightly late to the party. We have just started and I am intrigued to see where it goes.It is a shocking watch so far at the injustice so many women face after being sexually abused. My heart breaks that this is such a reality for so many people.

The Crown

I have talked about my love of the Royal family before so it is unbelievable that it has taken me so long to watch this series.
I loved it, every single episode was a history lesson. For a family I thought I knew well, I have learnt so much. But also about the history of this country.

I really enjoyed how they tied in historic events and the Queen. I thought Claire Foy was a superb Queen, although the switch to Olivia Coleman takes some serious adjustment. She is of course brilliant, but I don’t know why I just don’t buy it as much as I did with Claire leading.
Maybe I just don’t like change. Plus the age difference in a matter of months just threw me completely. But I can see why they did it.

I would recommend this show to anyone, you don’t even need to be a fan of the Queen. Although I suspect you’ll feel a little warmer towards her once you’ve finished.

I was very happy to hear the news that it has been extended for another series, so now we just Corona to go away so they can get back to filming it. I need more!

Dead to me

The first series of this show was both hilarious and poignant all at the same time. As someone who has experienced grief, I found it really relatable. The characters and their relationship seems a little odd from the off but it takes a slightly darker path that I didn’t really see coming.

I am currently watching series 2 and although I have not connected with it as well as the first, I am still really enjoying it.

It is worth a watch for Christina Applegate alone, I think she is massively underrated as an actress.

The Last dance

Now if you’re an 90’s kid, you will undoubtedly know who Michael Jordan is and what he is famous for. Although you would assume that this was a show about Basketball, in reality it is so much more than that.

We follow Michael and the Chicago Bulls in 1997/98, They are well on their way to the NBA finals and continuing their championship winning streak.

The focus of course is on Michael and his famous 23 jersey, but this series documents the teams ‘Last dance’ as the team itself was set to change forever at the end of the season.

As I am not a basketball fan, I was watching purely on the recommendation of others and I am so glad I did. This series was a great eye opener. I learnt a lot about the team of course but also about what it takes to be the best.

Michael Jordan came across really well, a very down to earth guy… Most of the time. I certainly wouldn’t want to get on the wrong side of him though. And I’d be very careful where I ordered a pizza from in future!

Sweet Magnolia

This was recommended to me and it is not Rob’s sort of thing at all. This mean’s that I only watch it as and when I can.

This does mean that I am kinda losing track of what is going on if I am honest. It looks like a good series though so I plan on restarting it and binge watching it one day in the holidays.

Lost

I have recently decided to share Lost with F, He loves watching something with us but finding something we all like can be tough. I thought we’d give this a go and so far he has been glued. So much so that he has dumped me and is binge watching while I work!

It is lovely though to dip in and out and talk to him about it. He has so many questions… didn’t we all!? But I am loving sharing this with him.

To watch list

With 6 weeks lying ahead of me, I wanted to put some things on my watch list. And finish off some bits that have been ongoing for quite some time. This is what I have come up with so far.

  • The Good place
  • Ozark
  • Dark
  • Dead Set
  • Dark
  • Russian Doll
  • When they see us
  • The Alienist

In honesty, this will probably see us through until 2021 as we are pretty slow TV watchers!

I love hearing your recommendations and top tips. What are you currently watching and what would you suggest we check out?

  14. Ooh, I love a good Netflix recommendation. Dark was AMAZING! And Dead to Me was really good too. Currently watching The Good Place, and can’t wait for Season 2 of The Umbrella Academy to be released end of July.

    1. clairelomax2018 says:

Umbrella academy keeps popping up as a recommendation so I might have to check that one out x

  15. I find Netflix so overwhelming as there’s so much choice so I absolutely rely on other people recommendations to guide me on what to watch! I loved the Good Place. The later series go a bit off piste but I still really enjoyed them!

    1. clairelomax2018 says:

It is a bit which is why I have to get recommendations, or you could spend hours searching for something to watch! We watched the first episode of the good place last night and I really liked it x

  16. I haven’t watched any of these Netflix series but I’ll have to give them a go as some of them sound really good. The Crown has been on my radar for a while but I keep putting it off as it’s not something I usually read and I’m worried I won’t like it. I really want to try and get into more period dramas soon 🙂

    1. clairelomax2018 says:

I’d highly recommend, I was the same. I thought I wouldn’t really enjoy it but its so well done. It feels really high budget stuff x

  17. Friends is one of my favourite shows ever! I watched it way before it got put on Netflix! One show I’d love to watch is The Crown, it seems really good! x

I can still remember watching the final episode as it aired all those years ago, me and my friend called each other and just shouted through our tears ‘She got off the plane’ Brilliant TV x x

  18. Am I the only person in the world who doesn’t have Netflix. It’s an arse as some of these sound great

    1. clairelomax2018 says:

It is worth trying out the free 30 days. It is the best £6 I spend a month x

  19. Johnny says:

When this year ends I think The Last Dance is going down in my top 3 best watches. I’ve learnt so much about basketball through watching MJ’s and the Bulls’ success on the court as well as his downs. Your summary on Friends seems short, maybe because Friends is the benchmark for sitcoms and when its mentioned the rest is history 😄 Dead to Me was recommended by my bro too so I’m gonna give it a good try in the near future 😉 Lovely choices Claire Bear!

    1. clairelomax2018 says:

It was such an interesting documentary, my heart absolutely broke when his Dad was killed and when he played on Father’s Day?! My god I was a wreck! The bulls were a team like no other, what I wouldn’t give to go back and see that team play!

It feels like friends just kinda sums itself up really.

Dead to me is a great watch, the first series more than number 2 but that’s quite often the case really x

  20. I always get pangs whenever I see Netflix or Sky recommendations because we don’t have either 🙁 But I do have fond memories of SATC – Samantha was my favourite, she had so much brass neck! Lisa x

  21. Great post! Thank you for sharing! I love friends, dead to me and the good place! I’ll have to check out the other shows!

  22. I loved Russian Doll. It was such a great series.

    1. clairelomax2018 says:

I still have a few to watch I think but the lead actress is brilliant x

  23. Nons Mshengu says:

I absolutely LOVED the crown ! I’ll definitely be checking out the rest on the list 😍

    1. clairelomax2018 says:

Such a great series. Enjoy some of the others x x

  24. Great suggestions, I’m currently rewatching White Collar… But I do have a secret crush on Matt Bomer. There’s just something about his eyes…

  25. All very good recommendations! I love having something like Friends to watch in the background/when I’m too lazy to pay attention to anything new.

    1. clairelomax2018 says:

Snap. I watch it a lot when I am working from home or blogging x

  26. Some great suggestions here – I really started to enjoy the Crown but I just can’t seem to get past a certain point! I loved Modern Family and watched the majority of it, and I’m currently watching Prison Break through for like the 5th time! I need to become better at taking a chance on something new though.

  27. They only thing I’ve ever watched out of these is friends, which I watched when I was a teenager, mostly because of Jennifer Aniston 😂

I remember the hype for lost, but never got round to watching it.

  28. Some good recommendations there. I’ve just started Ozark and am enjoying it so far.

I’m also a massive fan of Better Call Saul!

    1. clairelomax2018 says:

I really want to try Ozark, heard good things about it x x

  29. that’s a great program for this summer 😉 even if I’am not a Netflix Accra but I think I’ve already watched 8 of your suggestions (we’ve good taste I know 😉

    Thanks for sharing with us

  31. These sound like some great options. I love watching The Crown and will be so lost when its over for good. I haven’t watched The Last Dance for years so I may have to watch that again.

  32. I love Friends. I have been watching that since I was really young on video as my mum had the vhs box set. I have heard of a couple of these but I will have to check some of these out. Thank you for sharing your recommendations.

  33. Change of Tomorrow says:

Awesome list. Not a big fan of Netflix and shows in general, but will definitely add some of them to my list 🙂

    1. clairelomax2018 says:

I hope you enjoy some x

  34. There’s so much to watch on TV I end up not watching anything at all. Thanks for the recommendations will definitely take a look.

  35. Ozark, Dark and Russian Doll are SO GOOD. I love The Crown. I much preferred the first 2 seasons – I re-watched those over and over again haha! Dead To Me is so good too but I still need to watch the second season! It’s on my list. I’m currently working my way through Desperate Housewives (again) xxx

  36. Dead to me and white lines are just fab! I want to watch another series like them! There is nothing better than getting lost in a series in such an unsure world like what we are living in! Might give some of the others a go including unbelievable. Thanks for sharing!

    1. clairelomax2018 says:

I completely agree. Unbelievable was so good, I am still feeling it even though we finished it a week ago x

  37. Oooh I love friends! I’ve been watching it again recently for the hundredth time, it’s so easy to pop on in the background 🙂

  38. Great recommendations. I’m going to be adding some of these to my watch list.

  39. I loved Dead to Me. It was one of the best shows I’d watched in a while 🙂

    Louise x

  40. I haven’t watched any of these – that’s my list nicely topped up! i’ve been making my way through Teen Wolf recently and enjoying it – again, late to the party!

  41. We love Netflix too! These are some great recommendations to fill up the summer evenings. I’ve only seen Friends and a bit of Lost! I’m definitely going to dig in and give some of your ideas a try.

  42. I loved White Lines! I have never watched the Crown but I have heard so many good reviews I might need to watch it soon.

  43. Thank you for sharing your top recommendations!! I love discovering new shows to watch on Netflix. I’ve been wanting to watch The Crown – it’s on my list, but lately I’ve been binge-watching Korean dramas 😂

    1. clairelomax2018 says:

Oh I might have to have a look at some, my partner loves Korean stuff x

  44. I need to check some of these shows out. The only one on this list that I have watched is Friends. Netflix is great but sometimes I spend more time searching for something to watch than actually watching it, so having a list of shows to look at is a good idea.

  45. Those are some good shows! I’m always rewatching Friends and I want to start watching Sweet Magnolias. Also you are going to LOVE When They See Us. Make sure you have plenty of tissues towards the end.

  46. I second all of these! Dead to me was amazing. We binged it in just two days!

  47. Unbelievable was SO gripping (and unbelievable 👀)

    I recommend adding The Sinner to your list… S1 & S2 (wouldn’t bother with S3!!)

Going to have a look at The Last Dance! Love your blog!

    1. clairelomax2018 says:

Thank you so much Georgie. We have just started on Sinner and I am really enjoying it so far x

  48. I remember watching Unbelievable when it arrived on Netflix, it’s a really difficult watch but definitely worth it.

  49. Awesome recommendations. I might check out a few of these actually, as I mostly watch documentaries and food-related things.

    1. clairelomax2018 says:

      I hope you enjoy x x

  50. I loved Claire Foy in The Crown too! I was quite bummed out when they swapped her out. I have been watching out since it was first available for streaming in Season One and I haven’t stopped watching it whenever a new season drops. The cinematography and the setting were so good. I honestly watched it more for the vibes and the portrayal of it all than anything else.

Sweet Magnolia was a show that my gut told me would be good, but I also went in with low expectations. I ended up loving how the show gave me loads of positive vibes. Kinda didn’t expect that ending though (not gonna spoil it here in case any of your readers haven’t seen it)!

    1. clairelomax2018 says:

I am still really upset about Claire Foy. I will definitely stick with Sweet Magnolias then x

  51. some good series there! i love friends and watched it so many times now but never gets boring!
i can definitely recommend now you see us! it is so shocking and emotional i cried so much! and ozark is a good watch too.

  52. Hayley says:

I’ve been really loving Kim’s Convenience at the moment. Usually I like something a bit darker, maybe a crime drama but it’s actually really nice to settle down with something lighthearted during these difficult times. Thanks for sharing your recommendations!

    1. clairelomax2018 says:

Yes I agree, we all need to escape reality more often these days x x

  53. Haven’t watched Netflix in a while. These suggestions sound like great ones to watch! Thank you for sharing x

  54. Unbelievable was great, still cannot believe (no pun intended) that it’s based on a real life case. I’ve heard nothing but good things about The Last Dance so I will add that to my list. I really enjoyed seasons 1 and 2 of The Crown but by season 3 with the moon episode I was bored and stopped watching. Only recently started it again and loved the final 3 episodes! I highly recommend Ozark for the acting from Julie Garner (Ruth) and Ben (Tom Pelphrey). Not on Netflix but Mr Robot is incredible.

    1. clairelomax2018 says:

We’ve just started on Ozark and I agree Ruth is brilliant!!
