A letter to my amazing Dad

As Father’s day approaches, I really want to shout about my Dad. I often talk about my Mum of course, but my Dad deserves a whole post to his amazing self! This is why I wrote a letter to my Dad to share with you, and of course him!

A letter to my Dad

A letter to my Dad - Scared child on a set of red stairs with an adult

Dear Dad,

You were the first man in my life. The first man who taught me how a woman should be treated. The first man that showed me endless love.

You nurtured me and protected me, but not from the world. You allowed me the space I needed to discover the world for myself. You didn’t shy away from talking to me about the current affairs, how the world works and who you backed politically. (Mum would never share this secret information!)

You taught me what hard work is really like. You worked 2 jobs but you were always there. I don’t feel like you missed a moment of my childhood.

My early memories are made from the experiences I had with you. Taking picnics in your customers gardens while you worked hard to give us all we had as children.

Putting us to bed while Mum went out to work at night. Do you remember when N (my brother) used to sleep walk his way to the toilet… and end up peeing in my bin?

Teaching us to skim stones on the beach at Anglesey and constantly persevering when I was too terrified to climb those old stairs!

My Dad, the hero

You are always so brave when there was a spider to dispose of, even if that was in the middle of the night when I no longer lived at home. You were and always will be my hero.

You’ve supported me in everything I’ve chosen to do, no matter what it was or if you agreed with it. Remember the tattoo??

You never lose your temper, remaining cool and calm. I wish I could say I developed that same set of skills!

You’re so passionate about the things you love. Your garden, your sport, television and especially music. I think that’s where my love of music comes from.

You taught me the rules of cricket, and how formula one really works. You exposed me to music that I didn’t appreciate at the time, but now I get it.

The stories of your childhood and your travels are always fascinating to me.

I love how much you’ve taught yourself over the years. You’re still like a sponge, taking everything in. I love that about you.

My Dad, The Grandad

I think one of the things I love most about you is your Grandpa hat.

A proper Grandpa hat
Your actual Grandpa Hat!

From the moment I told you I was pregnant, you were nothing but excited. You never doubted me, you never thought it was a bad idea, you again supported me 100%.

You simply are the best Grandpa. You don’t allow yourself to be wrapped around F’s finger but you allow him to have all the fun a child should have with their grandparents. Late nights, extra sweets, gardening, cooking, questionable TV choices, football at the park, ice creams at the end of a walk. He adores you so much, he is a little you in the making.

And now you’re Bompa again. A name given to you by F all those years ago but he soon dropped it when he could say Grandpa. Now the girls get to call you Bompa instead and they love their Bompa.

My Dad, The Husband

Man and his wife on their wedding day - A letter to my Dad

I love how much you loved my Mum. You never fought, you respected each other equally and you still adored each others company. But most of all I love how you are coping without her, I know how hard it is and I know we don’t talk openly to each other about it because it is too hard for us both and neither one wants to upset the other. But don’t think for a moment that it is because I don’t want to.

You are so strong and you keep showing that every day, you keep going and I admire that about you so much.

Don’t ever change Dad, I love you so much and you are forever my Hero.
I promise I will always be here for you no matter what.

Happy Fathers day to the best one around!!!

Spread the love

Just thinking…what an amazing dad he was and continues to be…and a great grandfather (not a great-grandfather, I don’t want to unfairly age him – but a Great. Grandfather). And then the picture of him with your mom on their wedding day. Stream of tears down my face. You always ruin my makeup!
